Summary Click on "Learn more about this agency" button below for IMPORTANT information. The mission of the United States Air Force Academy is to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. USAFA, located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is an undergraduate institution that awards the Bachelor of Science degree. Faculty applications are invited from candidates who can contribute by interacting with cadets, both in and out of the classroom, as instructors and mentors. The student body consists of approximately 4,000 students representing every state and several foreign countries. USAFA faculty is an integrated group of military and civilian educators. The curriculum includes core academic and professional courses, and 27 disciplinary and interdisciplinary majors.Major Duties: Major Duties of the Position: Instructor (AD-21): Deliver structured undergraduate general-education instruction within the common curriculum under academic direction. Select and adapt approved instructional materials consistent with common course objectives, evaluate student performance, provide academic advising, maintain professional currency, and participate in assigned course-team, School, and Academy service. Assistant Professor (AD-22): Deliver and assess undergraduate courses within the common curriculum and contribute to their planning and continuous improvement. Assume increasing course leadership and coordination responsibilities, such as serving as a Course Director. Maintain appropriate scholarly or professional engagement while contributing to course teams, School service, and interdisciplinary integration. Associate Professor (AD-23): Provide sustained teaching excellence and lead major multi-section courses or significant curriculum components. Maintain sustained scholarly or professional engagement appropriate to the educational mission. Lead course-team and School-level curriculum and assessment efforts and actively mentor junior faculty. Professor (AD-24 - Nonsupervisory): Provide distinguished instruction and senior academic leadership in the design, integration, and continuous improvement of the common curriculum. Maintain mature scholarly or professional engagement appropriate to the educational mission. Lead major School- and institution-level academic initiatives and mentor and develop faculty colleagues across academic areas. The School of Integrated General Studies (SIGS) provides the common core academic education upon which later specialized disciplinary education builds. It forms cadets as Citizens, Leaders, Warfighters, and Scholars. The SIGS curriculum integrates civics, humanities, arts, and social sciences (CHASS), STEM and Artificial Intelligence, and Warfighting threads. Faculty work across conventional disciplinary boundaries to build a rigorous, ordered, and mission-aligned general education for future Air Force and Space Force officers. The CHASS thread forms cadets for the civic, human, moral, historical, cultural, and political dimensions of officership. Centered on Western civilization and the American constitutional order, it asks cadets to understand the civilization and republic they are preparing to serve, confront enduring questions of human nature, justice, freedom, authority, war, citizenship, and the common good, and understand the responsibilities that accompany the exercise of authority. Through sustained engagement with primary texts, historical experience, literature, philosophy, political thought, rhetoric, religion, the arts, and the social sciences, cadets should develop the knowledge, habits, and judgment required of reflective citizens, responsible leaders, capable warfighters, and serious lifelong scholars. CHASS is not a collection of introductory disciplinary surveys; disciplinary knowledge is selected and ordered in service of common formative purposes. These are teaching-centered positions. SIGS seeks educators who combine genuine disciplinary depth with unusual intellectual breadth; can teach beyond a narrow specialization; work seriously with primary texts, historical experience, literature, ideas, institutions, and competing arguments; and contribute to a common integrated curriculum. Faculty should connect civic and humanistic learning to leadership, warfighting, technology, national security, constitutional responsibility, and the profession of arms. Scholarly and professional activity supports this mission, but the paramount purpose of these positions is excellent undergraduate teaching and related institutional service aimed at sustaining the excellence and integration of the core curriculum.
