Instructional Specialist

DeKalb County School District is accepting applications for the following position: Instructional Specialist Location: Fernbank Science Center School Year: 2026-2027 General Description: Develops, implements, and evaluates formal and informal science instructional programs for K–12 students,educators, and the community in a variety of science disciplines and learning environments. Provides direct scienceinstruction; develops curriculum, instructional resources, assessments, and professional learning; and collaborateswith district personnel, schools, community organizations, and external partners to expand high-quality sciencelearning opportunities. Instruction may occur at Fernbank Science Center, schools, field locations, community sites,and through virtual or digital environments. Qualifications: • Master's degree or higher in science education is preferred. In lieu of an advanced degree, a minimum of five(5) years of relevant science-based experience is required. Acceptable experience may include work ingovernment agencies (e.g., NOAA, NASA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), school districts, university research,science communication, or informal science education settings such as museums and science centers.• Minimum of (5) years of Formal K-12 classroom science teaching experience is preferred, though significantexperience in informal teaching environments will also be considered.• Must possess, or be eligible to obtain, a valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC)-approvedcertificate in any science content area at the elementary, middle, or high school level. Certification at the T-5level or higher is preferred. Candidates may meet this requirement through a traditional certification route oran alternative certification program approved by the GaPSC. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: • Knowledge of DCSD curriculum and instructional expectations; current state and national science standards;scientific content within assigned areas of specialization; formal and informal science education practices;student assessment; research-based instructional practices; laboratory and field safety; and applicable districtpolicies and procedures.• Skill in effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication; science instruction and facilitation; classroomand group management; development of instructional materials and assessments; collaboration; problemsolving; and communicating scientific concepts effectively to audiences of varying ages, backgrounds, andlevels of scientific understanding.• Ability to design and facilitate age-appropriate science learning experiences using laboratories, investigations,demonstrations, projects, discussions, exhibits, field experiences, digital technologies, scientific equipment,and other appropriate instructional resources; manage multiple programs and priorities; and adapt instructionfor diverse learners and learning environments.
